The site was developed as a trading center for the flow of gold, diamonds and other wealth coming from Minas Gerais and São Paulo, the so-called Old Way of the Royal Road, the Golden Path. Even today we can walk through the mountains of the Atlantic Forest and close to see the preserved original paving stones built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries by slaves. Fort Perpetual Defender, with its trenches, cannons of the Royal Guard and the Gunpowder House, was built in 1703 and currently houses the Arts Centre and Paraty Popular Traditions.
Paraty offers one of the largest tourist experiences the unique combination of attractions. paradisiacal islands, flawless beaches, mountains with waterfalls and all the charm of colonial architecture of the Historic Center.
